Hollywood Monster scores a first

Hollywood Monster has become the first UK company to install an EFI VUTEk 5r printer, which was selectedfor its ability to meet the productivity levels required by the Birmingham-based company’s rapidly expanding retail customer base.

Simon McKenzie, Managing Director at Hollywood Monster, explained: “Prior to the EFI VUTEk 5r installation, we would typically move printed output over to a cutting table for finishing. However, now the 5r model’s X-Y cutting eliminates that process, thus removing significant delays.

“It’s not unusual for us to print off hundreds or even thousands of banners for big events. Previously they would all have needed trimming on our cutting table, or – dependent on size – even by hand. That entire process is now completed on-the-fly during the print process. It’s a huge productivity boost.”

Featuring high-quality output with seven-picolitregreyscale imaging in resolutions up to 1,200 dpi, the new VUTEk 5r model offers the fastest throughput in its class, thus providing Hollywood Monster with the ability to maximise quality, performance and efficiency.

As well as the inline X-Y finishing system for cutting and slitting, which facilitates the production of trimmed-to-size print straight from the printer, thefive-metre wide machine offers powerful LED-curing technology, together with easy and accurate double-sided backlit and blackout printing, while other helpful features include carriage height adjustment and a wrinkleanalyser to avoid head strikes. It can be used in conjunction with rolls weighing up to 750kg.

In terms of the production speeds achievable, initial tests have established that it can be used to print saleable quality mesh at 455m²/h, and PVC banner at 212m²/h.  Other material can be printed in perfect quality at 148 m²/h.

Simon McKenzie continued: “Being a long-time UV-LED printer user, we already expected the increased reliability, instant on/off curing lamps, and the ability to print sensitive and thin materials that such printers offer. However, the new machine goes beyond that and delivers a number of new features that reduce running costs and media wastage, which when you consider the multiple daily roll changes, combined with the volumes that we print, will result in us saving many thousands of square metres annually.Furthermore, over the machine’s lifetime, the media savings alone will make a significant contribution towards the purchase cost.

The VUTEk 5r is the sixth VUTEk printer that Hollywood Monster has acquiredover the last 12 years, all of which have been purchased through CMYUK, its regular EFI supplier.

Adding that the machine really stands out in its field, Simon concluded:“It appears to have been designed in association with experienced operators, as almost every new feature seems to solve a problem, improve a process or make the day-to-day running of the system easier and more efficient. And for a busy business like us, that can only be a good thing!”
