Litmus Mockups cuts turnaround times with Roland DG
Litmus Mockups hasn’t stopped growing since it was first founded four years ago to fill the gap in the market for the production of high-quality prototypes.
Having started as a two-person team, it has since evolved into a company with a staff of 20 people who currently work in a 10,000sq.ft facility in Hull, as well as an office in London. Its clients include many of the major brands, design agencies and large reproduction houses that are always looking for innovative new packaging designs.
In 2016, the company installed a Roland DG VersaUV LEC-540 , which effectively enabled it to reduce its turnaround times from days to hours and last July, the pace picked up further, following the installation of a second, similar machine.
Litmus Mockups had already been using two Roland VS eco-solvent printers for longer runs, but had relied on traditional printing and tooling methods to create the initial design prototypes. These processes included wetproofing, cold and hot foiling, embossing and debossing and die-cutting – time-consuming procedures that meant it took two to four days to complete atypical carton mock-up.
Gareth Hartley, the company’s Managing Director, explained that he went to Drupa in 2016 specifically in order to research the available digital printing options that would help to speed up production.
He said: “The Roland LEC was on our must-see list at Drupa and we were so impressed that we organised to see a further demonstration at Revolution Digital, a Roland distributor with which we’d already formed a great working relationship. The results achieved on that day made the purchasing decision a total no-brainer.”
“The VersaUV has incredible functionality; it’s can produce special effects such as foils, together with spot varnishes and embossing far more quickly than the traditional techniques we were using, while also achieving accurate, real-world colours, thanks to the use of its unique RIP and colour management solution.
“The packaging prototypes market is very fast, with clients typically requiring mock-ups the next day, or even the same day, something which simply wasn’t possible for us before the VersaUV was installed.”
The Roland VersaUV LEC-540 is a combined printer-cutter, which is perfect for the creation of packaging prototypes, as well as labels, special effect decoration and a host of other applications. Able to print onto a wide variety of materials at resolutions up to 1440dpi and to produce custom textures with white and gloss ink, it is an incredibly versatile machine.
Litmus Mockups uses the Roland LEC alongside other printing processes including flexo, litho and silkscreen, thus offering its customers a wide number of options.
Gareth Hartley adds that the after-sales service he has received thus far for all four Roland printers, which are covered by Roland DG Care warranties, has been excellent. He concluded: “We’ve been really impressed with everything that Roland has been able to offer and as we are considering expanding our services to include 3D modeling, another area where Roland excels, I have no doubt that we will be adding further Roland equipment to our line-u very soon!”
