Multi-coloured messaging for motorists

A new mobile Variable Message Sign (mVMS) is being used for the first time in Berkshire and, according to a local traffic and road safety systems engineer it can be a ‘game-changer’ with the potential to make a massive difference to motorists in the area.

The Advantage DC Tri-colour mVMS, developed and supplied by Rennicks UK, uses the latest high resolution screens and is capable of displaying roadside pictograms and messages in much improved quality and in up to three colours.

Ian Gill, traffic and road safety systems engineer for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, said that the new sign will help alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow in certain situations.  “We have only had the sign for a few months and it has already shown its value,” he said.

Shot-19-SDOThe unit can present accurate representations of instantly recognisable High Code signs, which can be changed at will, while the facility to display amber messages means the unit can also be used for traffic management, campaign support or guidance at special events.

Ian Gill said that, while the unit uses very little power, the graphics are outstanding.

The bespoke units, which are IVA-approved and meet all the requirements in the Traffic Signs Regulations, can be remotely operated to provide real-time traffic information and alerts.

He added: They can also be used as giant radar units.  “Because the unit tracks and displays vehicle speeds, it will greatly improve safety.”
