PFI Group acquires Futurama

PFI Group has acquired the Leeds-based Futurama Group, a sign company that was originally established as a signwriting shop in the east end of London in 1880.

The business subsequently passed through generations of the Roberts family and was renamed Futurama in 1958. Over the intervening years, it has expanded, developed and grown far beyond its traditional signage base to become one of Europe’s leading providers in the delivery of branded environments for some of the world’s best-known brands, including NatWest, Renault, M&S, TSB, Lloyds Banking Group, Nissan Europe, Co-op, SEAT Europe, Iceland, and the Post Office. Its services include merchandising, sign manufacture, retail systems, cladding, network support, displays and furniture, and it offers a complete end to end solution of high volume brand roll-outs and maintenance programmes for the retail, financial and automotive sectors.

With its headquarters in Manchester, PFI Group now comprises PFI Signs, GB Sign Solutions, Sign Plus (inc HT Screenprint), Lofthus Signs, In2 Signs & Graphics, Shades Graphics, Mardan Products and the Futurama Group. Further acquisitions are planned, in line with its current growth strategy.

Commenting on this latest acquisition, Darren McMurray, CEO of the PFI Group said: “We are delighted to welcome Futurama and its team to the PFI family. This addition further complements our range of specialist capabilities, whilst also strengthening our leadership position in the UK print and signage marketplace and extending our ability to provide an all-encompassing, full-service sign, graphics and display offering to customers across Europe while, at the same time, diversifying both our product and customer mix.”

Futurama’s acquisition marks another major milestone in the PFI Group’s buy and build strategy, while also providing the combined group with the opportunity to rack up a total revenue that is forecast to be in the region of £35 million for 2020.

Marc Edwards, Futurama Group’s MD commented: “We are delighted to be joining the PFI family. It was clear from the initial discussions with Darren that there was a true fit and alignment between our two companies, with both sides wanting to enhance their offering to customers.

“The combined business has a robust leadership team, and we feel that we can bring some further qualities to The Group by offering a full turnkey branding solution both in the UK and Europe.

“Since the summer of 2017 Futurama has seen some challenging times, during which the board and senior management team have succeeded in providing the stability required to supporting our existing clients and introduce new brands and business to the portfolio, and I thank them for that.

“The subsequent coming together of PFI and Futurama heralds the dawn of a new era where we can start to further enhance the group’s offering and together build the secure foundation required to support our aspirations for growth and achieve our collective milestones. The combination will, in turn, also provide our staff with a pathway as to success.”
