Roland helps Handy Labels to extend market reach

First established in 2007, Handy Labels further extended its reach last year following the introduction of a brand new website, which is designed to help artisan businesses to improve their packaging and accessibility.

When print expert Martyn Kilford first started the company he mainly offered signage, but when he identified a growing demand for labels, he decided to change focus. He commented: “Over the last decade we have been using two Roland DG SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 large format printer/cutters and they really came into their own once we began to concentrate on label production.”

In fact, the move into labels was so successful that the company relocated into larger premises in Portishead and launched a new website to showcase the entirety of its offering.

With minimum print runs of only 25 labels and an easy-to-use free design tool on the website, Handy Labels attracts small, artisan businesses as well as some blue-chip brands. Martyn reports that candle companies and gin makers are typical customers and each one is looking for something unique that will delineate their brand and make them stand out.

He continued: “The Roland SOLJETs handle lots of different material changes in one day and can even be left working overnight. They have, essentially, been running 24/7 for over a decade and are still going strong. Roland printers just keep on printing, no matter what you throw at them.”

The Roland DG SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 system offers printing and contour-cutting technology in one integrated machine. Eco-solvent inks with metallic and white options ensure impactful graphics on labels, signage, banners, vehicle wraps, fine art, decals, POP displays and more, making it the ideal machine for print businesses that are keen to explore new markets.

Thus far, Handy Labels, which can also offer an in-house design service, has printed 88,500,498 labels, with 99.8 percent of orders being dispatched within 48 hours.

Michelle Jones, the company’s Business Manager said: “We’re in premises where we can expand and packaging is the next logical move for us. We already have 42,000 returning customers and although we’d welcome more, we don’t want to get too big as all of our work is hand finished. We like to ensure that everything we send out is as good as it can possibly be – we’re really proud of what we do.”
