SignFab (UK) and Make it Happen help to close the skills gap

As a company that is committed to providing education and training in the workplace, SignFab (UK) works closely with independent training consultant ‘Make it Happen’ to deliver industry relevant practical and theoretical training to help close the skills gap in the sign industry.

SignFab (UK) thus hosts monthly ‘Make it Happen’ sessions, one-day courses that are held in the company’s Leicester-based factory and offer a whistle-stop tour through every conceivable sign solution, together with information on new product developments and installation methods.

The sessions are delivered by Make it Happen Director, Sam Armstrong, whose 17 year career in the sign industry has equipped her with a wealth of knowledge and experience that she is passionate about passing on to both novice and established signmakers. The day provides attendees with lots of handy hints and tips as well as a list of do’s and don’ts.

Sam Armstrong explained: “When I first introduced the Make it Happen programme I wanted to ensure that a value was put upon fabricated and illuminated signage.

“Holding the programme at SignFab (UK) facility enables us to demonstrate, first-hand, the full range of processes taking place under one roof and also provides the delegates with an excellent opportunity to learn why, for example, a built-up letter commands a certain price, as they can actually see it being hand fabricated using miniature ovens and irons.

“Previous delegates have told us that they think the day works well, as the theory discussed in the training session is later brought to life on the technical factory tour hosted by Mike Smith, SignFab (UK)’s Operations Director. Delegates are encouraged to view the company’s laser in action, to talk to fabricators in the letter workshop, follow the paint track through its various processes and observe assembly operatives creating the final products.”

The day also includes a question and answer session with Alan Hill, SignFab UK’s Installation Manager.

Mike Smith commented: “It has been a pleasure to welcome so many sign industry delegates to our facility and I can honestly say that everyone who has attended so far has thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the experience, from the training session, to the factory tour and the final assembly.

“In addition, it is also becoming apparent that the educational days are helping our clients understand everything we do, which, in turn, helps with the quoting process and in turning the quotes into orders in a timely manner.”
