Solopress spends to save
Twelve months after the installation of two Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED wide format printers, Jack Clifford, Head of Operations at Solopress, confirmed that the machines have improved the quality and reliability of the company’s output, while also reducing its ink spend.

Based in Southend-on-Sea, Solopress, one of the largest online print businesses in the UK offering litho, digital and wide format print, first moved into wide format production 10 years ago but has seen an increase in the volume of its wide format work of 30 percent during the past 12 months, along with a very welcome 45 percent reduction in its ink usage.

Jack, who is pictured right above with Paul Fitch of Agfa,  enthused: “Buying the two Agfa Anapurna engines has definitely been one of our best investment decisions. We run the machines 24/6 under normal circumstances and they have produced great quality print with only three quickly resolved, service interventions in the past year.

“Agfa was a new supplier and thus we diligently tested the machines prior to purchase, but they have delivered much more than we expected. Crucially, with the onset of COVID-19 they have also enabled us to offer products that have accounted for around 40 percent of our revenue during the past few months.”

Solopress invested in these new hybrid print engines as part of its move from dedicated roll to roll machines in the summer of 2019 and following an initial training period, began to explore the possibilities offered by new products and markets. Since the Pandemic hit the UK, it has used them to diversify into the production of wall mounts for hand sanitiser units, wall stickers and floor graphics in huge volumes. The department, which usually employs 10 staff is currently using 15 people and the wide format division now delivers around 20 percent of the company’s overall business, a development that has inspired increased confidence in its wide format capability.

Jack concluded: “Consumables are the biggest cost for any print company and the new Agfa machines have saved us an enviable amount on ink in the past 12 months. I genuinely think the Anapurna’s are a great wide format engine and I would recommend these machines to anyone.”
