The gateway to Blackburn

The gateway to Blackburn

The rich and diverse history of Blackburn has been captured in the Lancashire town’s vibrant new gateway sign, which was designed, produced and installed by Signs Express (Preston) free of charge.

A massive 140 metreslong and 2.5 metres high, the sign is installed on a wall at Larkhill, one of the main routes into the town, whereit celebrates all of the significant milestones in Blackburn’s long history.

They include the town becoming the ‘weaving capital of the world’ in first half of the 18th century when its population swelled from 5,000 to over 130,000 and the establishment of Thwaites’ brewery in 1807.The creation of Blackburn Rovers in 1875 is also featured, as is the name check given by the Beatles who sang about Blackburn’s ‘4,000 holes, which were set to ‘fill the Albert Hall’, on their 1967 Sergeant Pepper album

The sign concludes with Blackburn’s current multi-million pound regeneration programme, which includes a new bus station dubbed ‘the Harrods of bus stations’.

Signs Express worked closely with Blackburn and Darwen Council after approaching the local authority with its idea for the concept. Furthermore it has donated the sign to the town for a three-year period in return for a mention on the wall.

Signs Express (Preston) Director, Ben Hall said: “As a Lancashire-based company we are proud to support community initiatives such as this. Our design team carried out all of the initial research and worked with our production unit to create a striking montage that celebrates Blackburn’s past, as well as highlighting its future direction and to help visitors to discover all of the wonderful things that Blackburn has to offer them.”

Councillor Phil Riley, Executive member for Regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:  “This signage is part of our continuing efforts to welcome visitors to the town and to demonstrate that Blackburn is changing and looking forward to an exciting future.”
