A towering challenge
After 12 months of exposure to wind, weather and sea-spray the graphic images that wrap the reception building and walkways for Weymouth’s Sea Life Tower have proven their durability and continue to present a striking effect.
When a new attraction for Weymouth was required to add interest to the town, Merlin Entertainments, which also owns Weymouth Sea Life Park, came up with the innovative idea of a adding a 174ft. high rotating observational tower, giving panoramic views across the town, bay and beyond, and forming a natural landmark for the whole bay.
Swift Signs was awarded the contract to supply and install the graphic wrap and selected William Smith to provide a suitable and extremely durable media.
Karl Lantree, Swift Signs Partner, explained: “We wanted a really high quality and durable print, so asked William Smith to supply this for us, bearing in mind the location, the time of year we would be applying the graphics and the fact that it was to be applied to a difficult structure. Happily, the technical advice provided by the team at William Smith, plus the samples supplied made both the process and product selection very easy.”
It was essential that the selected material could withstand wind and weather at the sea’s edge and also handle well in winter weather conditions, especially as installation took place during March. Although not built specifically for the London Olympics, Merlin Entertainments intended that it to be ready prior to the start of theGames. Bearing all of this in mind, William Smith recommended the use of Arlon DPF 8000, which was then sampled and approved by the project architects.
Arlon DPF 8000 is a satin white high-tensile polyvinyl chloride film, with an extra strong permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive that offers an ideal solution for indoor and outdoor graphics on ‘hard-to-stick’ and low energy surfaces. It conforms well to flat and slightly contoured surfaces on substrates such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polyurethane. It can be applied in cold temperature environments and comes with an outdoor durability of up to seven years. DPF 8000 is also designed to meet the marking requirements and specifications of the transportation, vending and automotive industries
“It’s a fantastic product and has become one of our mainstays,” reported Karl Lantree. “For this project the weather was our guiding factor and DPF 8000 has a nice threshold for application; even though the adhesive is quite aggressive, it’s not too temperature critical. It’s a testimony to the product that it was applied in very harsh conditions and one year on is still working very well.”
Approximately one kilometre of Arlon DPF 8000 was used to create the graphics, which completely wrap the exterior of the reception building and walkways leading the tower.
Karl concludes: “The results are stunning and better still, as a consequence, we have been awarded other contracts using the same materials!”
Arlon DPF 8000 is available ex-stock from William Smith and next day delivery is available on orders received before 6pm.
