The Vinyl Guys transform a hobby into a business

Anyone who has ever wanted to turn a hobby into a lucrative business should follow the example set by The Vinyl Guys, which did just that.

The Vinyl Guys, which is based in the west Midlands, first embarked on its journey to business success three years ago, using a PC and a small 60cm plotter/cutter to produce graphics for friends as and when required. Anything which was larger than the size of the plotter, or which required printing, had to be outsourced on demand.

Alex Liggett, owner of The Vinyl Guys, explained: “I started the business as a hobby three years ago, to meet the growing needs of friends in the motorsports sector, but in 2016, demand had grown to such an extent that I purchased the TrueVIS SG-540 print & cut machine from Grafityp, after falling in love with Roland DG’s eco-solvent printers at The Print Show.”

He continued: “The printer has been pivotal in transforming my sideline enterprise into a profitable business. The difference now is unbelievable. I can print samples, test my artwork and turn work around faster, at a higher quality and at a lower cost. As soon as we installed our Roland machine, our profit margins grew by a significant amount overnight. Customers also noticed the difference in terms of quality.”

In addition, the SG Series printer also enabled Alex to expand his repertoire by offering exciting custom work, as well the high-quality vinyl jobs and vehicle wraps for which the company was originally known.

Encouraged by the success of the SG-540, The Vinyl Guys also purchased a laminating system, thus enabling every stage of the printing process to be completed in-house.

Alex concluded: “Before the arrival of the SG-540 I had little or no control over our end-product, but now I can guarantee the quality of everything we print, including banners, posters, vehicle graphics and signage – 90 percent of the time we are printing on vinyl of some sort.”

With a new, exciting job always on the horizon, and every successful application posted across The Vinyl Guy’s social media channels for all to see, it’s easy to see how much the addition of an in-house printer has benefited Alex’s business and will continue to increase profits and impress customers for years to come.
