Personalised printed patches with style
Most small businesses take years to be successful but Type One Style has achieved overnight success thanks to its innovative, personalised self-adhesive polyester patch, which, once printed, can be applied directly to the skin.

Type One Style is a diabetes accessory start-up business that creates premium, personalised patches, and stickers for the Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) that is aimed at people with type 1 diabetes and allows them to express themselves to the fullest and wear their CGM with confidence.

For Type One Style owner, Charlie Cawsey, offering a premium quality finish that can withstand regular use has always been central to his company’s business ethos.

When assessing the opportunity to sell premium patches, Charlie reached out to several international suppliers but was disappointed by the low print quality he received. His next move was to outsource to local third-party printers who promptly tripled their prices, despite offering products of indifferent quality. He also recognised that since customers request many different shapes and sizes of patches, ordering sufficient quantities to be delivered at speed was problematic, to say the least, and he quickly ran out of stock of several shapes.

Charlie explained: “A further complication was the fact that some third party print businesses would reject the work out of hand because the medically-regulated fabric, which is not blade-friendly and has to be printed with UV ink, was incompatible with their solvent printers.”

Happily, Roland DG’s VersaUV LEC2-330 printer/cutter was launched just as Charlie decided to bring production in-house, making machine selection an easy choice, as the LEC2-300 not only prints designs directly on to self-adhesive polyester material – it also cuts out the decals too. In addition, the roll-to-roll printer produces a premium quality product and is also consistently reliable and simple to use.

Once the purchasing decision was made, Type One Style purchased the printer from authorised Roland DG dealer, Grafityp.

Charlie continued: “Without our LEC2-330, we wouldn’t have a business at all. The machine is exceptionally sturdy, runs 12 to 16 hours a day without any problems and delivers exceptionally sharp and vibrant output. Furthermore, the software is so easy to use that you could teach a chimpanzee to operate its features within an hour – not that we are planning on doing that! As a result, the number of orders has increased and our manufacturing costs have been reduced by 70 percent, but best of all, we can now print on demand, so stock issues are a thing of the past.”

Type One Style has also taken advantage of the ink’s cost-effectiveness thanks to the EN-71/3 certified ECO-UV EUV5 ink supply system, which has led to a 25 percent reduction in the cost of the ink it uses.

In the future, Charlie hopes to expand his business to capitalise on further revenue opportunities and states that he is interested in investigating the possibilities of offering a print-on-demand clothing service and exploring décor opportunities too. For now, though, he is happy to have sidestepped some of the industry’s supply chain challenges, such as the surge in product prices and shipping costs when importing printed patches from China.

He concluded: “Thanks to the VersaUV LEC2-330, we have now boosted our reputation as a medical sticker and label specialist and can be much more strategic in our marketing as our prices are no longer reliant on import or third-party manufacturing costs and we are ready to use our newly acquired printing expertise to good effect in all sorts of other areas!”
