The Devil is in the Detail with a TrueVIS from Roland
Having spent 18 years working in the education sector, the tables were recently turned on Micheal Hawes when he has to learn all about digital printing and vehicle wrapping before setting up Devil is in the Detail, a brand-new signage business based in Selby, Yorkshire.
Micheal explained: “I was looking for a change of career and, since I have friends in the car industry I began researching the possibility of offering a dent repair and cosmetic vehicle service. This resulted in the formation of Devil is in the Detail a vehicle graphics business that presents very different challenges to those I faced in education!”
Perhaps as a result of his former career, Micheal spent considerable time studying the market and the available technology before launching his business. This involved online research, and visits to trade shows and suppliers’ open days, which in turn led him to Roland distributor Your Print Specialists (YPS) and the Roland TrueVIS VG-640. A combination inkjet printer/cutter, the TrueVIS offers a wide colour gamut, fast printing and drying, accurate cutting and remote operation, making it the ideal choice for graphics businesses of any size.
Devil is in the Detail moved into its own unit in mid-June, while Micheal was still wrapping up his previous business and it is now running the TrueVIS full-time on an unexpectedly large range of applications.
Micheal continued: “Initially, I planned to use the machine to produce vehicle graphics and digital wraps, but as word of mouth spread, I began to receive requests for banners and signage too, so I thought that it made good commercial sense to use the TrueVIS to its fullest potential.”
Happily, the TrueVIS can handle a wealth of different applications including die-cut labels and decals, posters and backlit displays, wall graphics and murals, fine art and photographic reproductions, and heat transfers for apparel.
Micheal observed: “I don’t originally come from a print background, but I find the TrueVIS is very straightforward to use. I like the integrated print and cut, the take-up unit is brilliant and it really is a multi-purpose machine.”
In order to maximise his investment Micheal, who is as detail-focused as his business’s name suggests, attended Roland’s intermediate print course at Coventry University. He said: “The course helped me to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, such as colour management, and I also went on the Introduction to Digital Print course at the Roland Creative Centre in Clevedon, which really served to illustrate the endless opportunities available in terms of applications.”
After just a few weeks, Devil in the Detail is already much busier than Micheal could have predicted. He concluded: “I want to build a reputation for producing first rate work and the TrueVis and my training at the Roland Academy has certainly got us off to a great start!.”
